Throwback to an enriching evening at Innovation City, Cape Town. I was humbled to share my experiences as a war-journalist and photographer with a captivated audience. From harrowing war zones to unforgettable encounters like the Frank Sinatra story, it was a pleasure to recount my journey.

Delving into two decades of photojournalism for Newsweek, my talks shares glimpses from an exciting and momentous journey. From being present at defining global moments to personal encounters with figures like Mandela, it's a behind-the-scenes look at life on the frontlines of history.

Mark Peters has had one of the most extraordinary lives.

Photographing some of the world's greatest celebrities and politicians, being sentenced to death twice, going on forced marches with guerilla troops, being tortured, and living the high life are only a small part of this highly unconventional man.

My list of 'unforgettable characters' in journalism is long, but Mark

will always be near the top.

Mark Peters combines the guts of a guerrilla warrior and the humanity of a saint. During my years as Editor-in-Chief at Newsweek, Mark covered his African homeland and the world, chronicling wars, insurrections and revolutions. He talked his way into - and out of - harm's way in the Balkans, the Gulf War, Cambodia, Afghanistan, the struggle against apartheid and beyond.

Along the way he forged remarkable human connections with everyone from a young shepherd boy - who saved his life - to Nelson Mandela. After documenting Mandela's historic release from prison with a photo that appeared on the cover of 4 million copies of Newsweek, the two men became great friends. Even after he became President, Mandela often visited Mark's home for leisurely Sunday afternoons, , including one four-hour lunch that remains one of the highlights of my life.
